I have read the entire Valkyrie Bestiary Series by Kim McDougall. It is well written, darkly humorous with a multitude of imaginative characters and creatures.
The world has been changed by the Flood Wars that destroyed cities and whole landscapes and allowed magic to escape and take over the land. Terra is angry with what humans have allowed to happen to her world and she plans to take control again. Montreal has become a safe bastion for people to live and survive. It is surrounded by a magically boosted barrier that protects from the terrifying creatures unleashed magic has produced. Kyra is a creature/pest wrangler. She rounds up and humanely rehomes or adopts the weird and wonderful that are only trying to survive in the confined space of the new Montreal along with the humans and human-like. Elves and vampires and gargoyles are just a few of the inhabitants. Life is a dangerous adventure in this new world and it takes courage and smarts to navigate the shoals. I could not get enough of this series, Kyra, Mason and Gita all became part of my imagination's family. I adored Jacoby who was tiny and fancied himself Kyra lady's apprentice. The world is immersive and the characters unforgettable. If you are looking for an escape from the onslaught of bad news and reality TV, check out this series. I promise you won't regret it!
