Hello Erin! Welcome to my blog couch.
Julie, thanks for the questions! I can't believe summer is already over.
Me either, it still feels like July! So, Erin, tell us about yourself? What do you like to do when you’re not a writer? I am an author, blogger, high school addictions counselor, world traveller and mom. When I'm not writing I'm typically juggling work and mom life. My personal therapy is paddling out and surfing until my arms feel like they're going to fall off. I also love to travel around the globe, play my guitar and work out.
With all of this in your life what inspires you to write?
The past twenty years of my life have inspired me to write. I deal with a lot of hurt and heartache in my work as a high school addictions counselor. When writing my goal is to alleviate some of the angst, frustration and uncertainty many face in dealing with parenting, addiction and mental health. I incorporate humor and my own life experience as a way to personalize my writing.
Life experience is powerful as an inspiration.Tell me more about your journey as a writer. When did you start and how do you keep the creative juices flowing? About two years ago I felt this crazy drive to write. It started with throwing words and experiences down on paper and gradually made its way into a manuscript. I've allowed writing to become my form of therapy, recharge and sharpening my mind and heart. Working in the mental health field every day is a challenge as well as layered with heaps of life lessons. These lessons fuel me to keep writing and pushing to strengthen what and how I write.
Give us the elevator pitch for your book. Peace, Love & Goodness: Lessons from the Drug Lady jumps into the hurt, joy and challenges of life and challenges readers as to HOW fully they are living life and HOW to take quality over quantity. It's through the words and lessons of a high school addictions counselor and around the world backpacker that lessons jump out to the reader with color, life and humor.
Do you have a favourite character in your story? Who is most like you? Ilario is by far, my favorite character in PLG. His heart, resiliency and passion for life is unlike anyone I've ever encountered.
Who would you like to see play your characters in a movie?
Jennifer Lawrence
One of my favourite actors, too. Do you have a favourite time of day and place to write? Do you have a routine?
I'm a creature of the morning. I wake up around 5 am and sit in my living room with my laptop, a cup of coffee and the windows cracked open so I can hear the waves crashing on the shore. That's my routine and I love it!
What do you do to market your book?
This summer I provided a number of speaking engagements through NC and Va chatting about the opiate epidemic, our kids and how to be and advocate for your family. I promoted my book during these sessions. I'm also active on my Facebook Page, Goodness Chick, and spreading the word through my networks in the mental health community.
Who are your three top author crushes? Who would you most like to meet?
Jon Krakauer, Frances Mayes & Maya Angelou ....I would have LOVED to have met Dr. Angelou. What an amazing woman!
What are your future plans for writing?
Currently, I've started on my second book and hope for a release by Spring of 2018. I love writing and believe that it has made me a better person. I'd love to find other platforms to write to a larger audience dealing with parenting teens, mental health and addiction. I believe that will come to fruition over time.
What words of wisdom would you share with aspiring authors?
Do not allow the words or opinions of others to interfere with your dreams. If you want to write, make it happen. Determination, passion and creativity allow for amazing things to happen. Life's too short not to put your words into action.
