Ha Noi FC lose 1-4 at home: the mistake was in the first 30 minutes, not the defence

At minute 90, Quang Vinh collected the ball some twenty metres from goal and struck it into the top corner. Quan Van Chuan got nowhere near it. The scoreline closed at 1-4. Up in the Hang Day stands, the noise died before the whistle did, and I could hear the Song Lam Nghe An coaching staff calling each other back to their seats.

A week ago I still placed Ha Noi FC in the title-contender bracket. After these 90 minutes I am keeping that call. I am only moving one thing.

Ha Noi FC's problem in this match was finishing and positional discipline, not the back four.

A crowd shouting is not evidence. I need the tape.

I rewound the match three times. Once for the four goals conceded. Once for the chances missed. Once for the way Quan Van Chuan moved. All three took me back to the same stretch of footage: the first 30 minutes.

For the first half hour, Ha Noi FC played exactly as Kewell wants. The ball moved wide on both flanks, Taggart and Hoang Hen kept finding chances. No goals came. Taggart missed chances a foreign striker in the V-League has to convert, and that was the first turning point of the match.

Across eleven years of watching V-League football, I have learned a pattern that almost repeats itself at Hang Day: the home side dominates, fails to score, then pushes its defensive line higher out of impatience. Four goals, four different attacking patterns, one shared cause: Song Lam Nghe An attacked the wide channels and the space behind Ha Noi FC's high line.

Cristie sits at the centre of the second goal. In his second appearance for his new club, a foreign centre-back let the ball hit him and change direction into his own net. I am not calling it a failed signing. I am calling it adaptation lag, and in the V-League the adaptation lag of a foreign defender is usually paid for at the exact price of goals conceded.

There was another moment I had to watch several times. Luizao ran through behind Ha Noi FC's defence and the offside trap broke completely. None of the four defenders held the same line. With a high defensive line, an offside trap is only worth anything when it is executed in sync, step for step. Ha Noi FC are not there yet.

Quan Van Chuan pushed too far up for Dnoja Joseph's long-range attempt. A goalkeeper sweeping outside his box is a tactical choice rather than an individual error — but it is only safe when the defensive line holds its distances. When the line pushes up and the goalkeeper pushes up with it, a team loses both layers of cover at once. The third and fourth goals were not Quan Van Chuan's.

His team may have played better than the scoreline suggests, or worse — two matches is far too small a sample to separate process from result.

A foreign coach in the V-League usually gets four to six matches to prove himself. Kewell has spent two of them. The window is still there, but the buffer thins with every round.

And I do not want to paint Quang Vinh in the colours Vietnamese media like to use. His two goals came in the 70th and 90th minutes, against a defensive line that had already lost its shape and stopped tracking back. That is the mark of a player with a good shot and good positioning, not yet proof of a starting place. Calling him a phenomenon after one match is how we load pressure onto the very person we just praised.

I was once stoned by critics for a week because I dared to speak against the wind. And I will keep speaking.

What I want to see in round three is not really a win. I want to see Ha Noi FC score inside the first 30 minutes. If their first goal again arrives after the 60th minute, the problem is no longer Kewell — it is the structure of the squad: an attack with no alternative plan when Taggart misfires.

As for Song Lam Nghe An, I will watch their next round with one concrete question. When the opponent does not push its line up, when they have to hold the ball and attack, can Quang Vinh and his team-mates score four more?

That is what separates a team that is flying from a team that has actually improved.
