Milton Keynes women's charity table tennis tournament raises £650 and collects 100 bras

The second annual women's charity table tennis tournament at Milton Keynes Table Tennis Centre concluded with impressive results: £650 raised for Breast Cancer Now and over 100 bras collected for recycling in support of Against Breast Cancer's breast cancer prevention campaign. The event took place on 6 September and was organized by Julie Snowdon – a Table Tennis England staff member and secretary of the centre. Julie Snowdon, who worked hard to prepare for the tournament, shared that the main goal was not sporting achievement but spreading the spirit of community sport and contributing to the fight against breast cancer. “We want every woman who comes here to feel happy, fairly treated, and part of something meaningful,” Snowdon emphasised. The tournament brought together 14 women, most of whom were regular participants in the centre's monthly ladies-only table tennis sessions. The number was not large, but the atmosphere was incredibly cohesive. Players were divided into groups for round-robin matches, then progressed to the final and a third-place play-off – a format deliberately kept simple so everyone could experience the joy of competing. A special highlight of the event was its dual fundraising approach: collecting cash donations for Breast Cancer Now – one of the UK's leading breast cancer research funds – while also collecting used bras for recycling. The bras were later handed to Against Breast Cancer, where they are processed into an alternative to coal fuel, both protecting the environment and generating financial support for medical research. Within just a few hours of play, more than 100 bras were donated – a figure far exceeding the organisers' initial expectations. According to our reporter's research, most participants were women who love table tennis and live in the Milton Keynes area. They found the centre through free sessions or recommendations from friends. For many, the tournament was not just an opportunity to sharpen their skills but also a place to meet, talk, and contribute to a humanitarian cause. Helen Carter, one of the amateur players, said: “I'm not good at playing, but when I learned that entry fees and donations would go to breast cancer research, I signed up right away. Exercising for a good cause makes me feel even better.” Beyond fundraising, the tournament also served as a small but effective awareness campaign. Organisers prepared leaflets on breast self-examination and the importance of early detection – a topic that still needs greater awareness among women in the UK.
